Dr. Karla Mercado-Shekhar is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences and Engineering and the Co-coordinator for the Centre of Biomedical Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Gandhinagar. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Engineering from Boston University, U.S.A. (2009) and her Masters (2010) and Ph.D. (2015) in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Rochester, U.S.A., as a Provost’s Fellow. She was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine (2015-2019) and a recipient of a postdoctoral research grant from the U.S.A. National Institutes of Health. At IIT Gandhinagar, Dr. Mercado-Shekhar co-leads the Medical Ultrasound Engineering (MUSE) Lab, which focuses on developing and translating ultrasound techniques to aid in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of diseases. Her current research interests include ultrasound tissue characterization, viscoelasticity imaging, blood flow imaging, and ultrasound-mediated drug delivery. Dr. Mercado-Shekhar is a member of the IEEE Ultrasonics, Ferroelectrics, and Frequency Control Society (UFFC-S) and serves on the Technical Program Committee of the IEEE International Ultrasonics Symposium. She also serves on the Biomedical Acoustics and Education in Acoustics Technical Committees of the Acoustical Society of America and the Advisory Editorial Board of the journal Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology.
